What is Liberty?

What is liberty?

If you’re reading this article, it’s most likely because this subject interests you or it’s probably a question that you’ve pondered time and again. Spoiler alert: I don’t have the response. But don’t leave yet, there’s something even better. This month, you’ll get to read how young people around the world answer this very question.

Libertarianism takes a big-tent approach and as an extension, so does Students For Liberty. One of the things I love the most about SFL is that it literally brings the expression “do you” to life. Local coordinators have varied interests and face different issues in their countries. That means that when the word “liberty” comes to mind, different issues come to the mind of each coordinator. At SFL, that also means that they get to work on these issues that are close to heart for them.

In the last couple of months, we’ve had new local coordinators show us why they joined SFL through their take on what the fight for liberty should look like. From combatting child marriage, to protecting the right to dissent, to pulling down obstacles in business, to protecting free speech, the issues are endless. Do we always agree with one another? No. In my opinion, that’s part of the beauty of it. But one thing we all agree on is this: we believe in freedom, in liberty, and we’re all striving for a freer world.

So this month, as you enjoy your summer vacation and prepare for la rentrée, read what our awesome coordinators have to say about liberty. And take some time to reflect on the question: “What does freedom mean to me?”
